You see digital manipulation and retouching in photography everywhere these days. For example, when you see Conan O’Brian in a magazine cover she looks pretty good, then when you run into him on the streets of New York City, he looks like my elbow. Ryan Obermeyer uses digital manipulation in a different way, he changes a photograph to make extraordinary art, instead of hiding flaws. According to his official Bio, he implements a type of selection where only the best parts of a photograph, combined with over 50 digital shots, will become part of his final piece. My favorites include his series with artist Imogen Heap, whereas the picture transformations make her look surreal and eclectic; quite frankly a lot like her music and Imogen Heap herself. Viewers could most likely tell he has talent as a painter too, but not unlike anything Bob Ross could ever do (who knows though, Bob Ross was a ninja). Art is becoming more technology oriented than ever before, but Ryan has managed to take technology, combined with painting and photography, to a different realm altogether. Presently, you need 50 different photos and painting techniques in order to make Britney Spears look decent for a magazine cover, so it is nice to know people like Ryan are still around to give us true art.
