I remember being at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and thinking that the official mascots, Athena and Phevos, looked like a steroid addicted Gumby.
Which brings me to the 2008 Official Mascots for the Beijing games, the FUWA. I have to agree that they are a much better designed mascot, even though it seems like they used a panda so you wouldn’t forget they are in China.
They are extremely cute as well, possibly because once you start realizing all the political turmoil in China at the moment, they will show you the FUWA and all will be forgotten with a simple AWWWW!
The mascots are named after the five basic elements. Also when you get the first syllable of each name and put it together, it sounds the same as a phrase that means “Beijing Welcomes You”. More pictures after the jump.
