There is something endearing about the Swedish. I say this of course having only met 2 or 3 Swedes in my life, but I like to think I can channel their culture listening to the music they create. I mean, “Young Folks” by Peter Bjorn and John has to be one of the most exasperatingly catchy songs in recent history. Plus it seems to have the ability to become catchier with each listen. Five listens in, the bongos transform from a quirky gimmick to an absolutely essential element in the song structure. By the tenth time you have heard the song that damn whistling melody somehow infuses itself into each and every neuron of your brain, thus becoming part of your consciousness. You are one with the whistling…
It is in this spirit of laid back, indie-dream-pop production that I introduce some peers of PB&J. Club 8 was formed in 1995 by Karolina Komstedt (from the band Poprace) and Johan Angergård (Acid House Kings, Poprace) as a form of a more down tempo side project. Leaning heavy on the influences of Twee and Bosa Nova, Club 8 has attained a noteworthy level of recognition and influence within the Swedish scene. Ever creative and adaptive in the studio, their sound is difficult to pinpoint throughout their 6 releases with the exception of Komstedt’s angelic vocals. Her dreamy lyrics and softly sweet melodies effortlessly transport you to your fondest memories of past summer days. In the soundtrack of your life, this is the music that is being played as you run hand in hand with your lover across golden wheat fields, swim in remote forest lakes and above all… as you lie in the sun, eyes closed, content to the world.
