It is another one of those Japanese animes with a sword, some little helpless kid, a samurai with no name that has to participate in fights so he can get more cool looking scars around his body. Sure, the storyline doesn’t seem too original in the world of anime (where you can be a dream fighter named after a seasoning), but Sword of the Stranger stands out due to small creative differences. First of all, the music is astounding. The main theme is used in a way that makes the scene more captivating, particularly in the last fight between the nameless samurai and the foreign blue-eyed demon. As said before, the story and fight seems may come off as a bit cliche, but it is rare to see an anime such as this one with such strong character development.
The animation is top notch and the blood spills are astonishing. An interesting note is that the story is based from true events: In his life, emperor Qin Shi Huang feared death and desperately sought the fabled elixir of life, visiting Zhifu Island several times to this end. He even sent a Zhifu islander Xu Fu with ships carrying hundreds of young men and women in search of Mount Penglai, where the Eight Immortals lived. These people never returned, as they knew that if they returned without the promised elixir, they would surely be executed.
If you really want to see it, you can find the whole movie on Youtube, but no matter what form you watch it in, if you like anime, swords, samurai, blood and kick ass music, then Sword of the Stranger will not disappoint you.
