In the true American sense of the word, the commercialism of cheap audio recording interfaces was promised to bend music availability from the studio into the bedrooms. This was great in my mind’s eye. Give the power into the hands of the musician, and watch the music scene branch out and evolve with a spirit of reckless freedom. However, like most thing that I fantasize about (i.e. a good Heroes episode for season two) this wouldn’t exactly be the case. It turns out that anyone can go out and buy these wondrous affordable recording devices. So instead of my music revolution of genre bending wonderment; the Internet is flooded with homemade songs from every whiny, talentless, melodramatic, black finger-nailed 17 year old git we as a society have to offer. Congratulations civilization, Pandora’s Box has been opened. We have given birth to Myspace music.
Alas, amid the cesspool of the middle children of the music community there are rays of hope I can cling onto. To give credit its due, it was my roommate that first stumbling on the myspace page of Throw Me the Statue. I remember the moment starkly because I was near passing out on his floor attempting to will the walls to stop spinning, mumbling something about Washington apple shots. In short order, T.M.T.S.’s songs invaded room after room of our humble household, filling our earlobes and hearts with a clatter of sounds that were distinguishably unique yet resolutely Seattle. The brainchild of one Capitol Hill resident, Scott Retherman has been developing his home recording skills for several years weaning down to a signature production style. Distorted synth basslines coupled with dancy electro beats and the obligatory glock with hand claps- toss in Rethermann’s guttural, creaking vocals to boot and you have the formula for Indie-pop perfection. In a matter of months T.M.T.S. went from the band playing on my roommate’s computer speakers to continuous airplay on KEXP and favorable critical review from music blog heavyweights such as Stereogum and Pitchforkmedia. Recently signed to Secretly Canadian ( home of the likes of Jens Lekmen), and gearing to record in a professional environment, this is certainly a band to keep a pulse on.
