Cool Addict

First of all let me say that I’m not a fan of books. They’re long, involve thinking and I swear some people only have them up on their shelves to look smarter when entertaining guests (yes, I am talking about myself). That said, me liking a book means a lot. That book has to overcome all my anti-reading biases and truly stand out… or just have really neat pictures.

I bought The Daring Book for Girls because I had heard of the Dangerous Book for Boys and was delighted to see a counterpart for my sex (and I had a Barnes and Noble gift card, so I only paid two dollars out of pocket for it). The book is all around neat. It has how-to sections on topics such as building a campfire, making a lemon-powered clock and double-dutch among others. Interlaced between the how-tos are stories of women throughout history.

I was hoping that the book had some sort of adult geared content (no, not that kind of “adult content”) that would apply to young women, but the closest you get to that are sections on how to negotiate a salary and definitions of investment options. Like many other reviewers have said, it’s the kind of book you wished you had when you were a kid. It’s a fun book with squeaky-clean intentions and, dare I say, empowering for the youngins. If you’re a mom, you should definitely read this with your pre-teen daughter and do some of the activities. If you’re a young woman, look over the book, reminisce and give it to a younger female in your family.

I guess you could say I liked the book, but that doesn’t mean I’ve turned a new leaf and become a “reader.” Nope. The book had neat pictures and won me over that way. I still stand firmly against “the reading” and am willing to sacrifice any sort of learning that comes from the activities. I warn all you other books – just try to woo me. You will lose.
